# Silk Current

Aperveil / Light, shaped for the web.

Collection: Premium (Aperveil Shaders and Aperveil Pro) · Coming soon.

A WebGPU ribbon of glowing threads for React: it sweeps through the frame and twists, surging and easing, with signals of light under the pointer.

[Aperveil integration guide](https://www.aperveil.com/docs)

## What it does

Silk Current sweeps a ribbon of fine glowing threads up through the frame and off to one side, twisting as it goes: flat it is a wide satin sheet, edge-on it pinches into one bright line, and its threads cross over one another rather than meeting in a point. It surges and eases instead of moving at one pace, a band of sheen travels along it, and its back threads are softly out of focus. Turn and mirror it to run any way. Under the pointer, fine signals of light run out along its threads.

## Choose it for

Give a fashion, beauty or creative studio page a moving accent: the ribbon on one side of the frame, the words in the space it leaves.

## Limits

Silk Current draws one ribbon; it is not a fabric simulation and does not wrap your content or follow a path you draw.

## Current look

Default. Color Looks change colors only; motion, geometry and typography remain unchanged.

## Landing scene

This preview uses `rotation`: 25, `offset`: 0.14. The editor link carries these settings with your Look. Direct editor visits use the product defaults; Reset all restores those defaults.

## Install

Silk Current is part of Aperveil Shaders and Aperveil Pro, coming soon. Its live demo is open; installation and downloads open in a later release. Free shaders install today: see the [Aperveil integration guide](https://www.aperveil.com/docs).

## Controls

- Ribbon (`colorA`, color): The ribbon's main color, its glow and its satin fill.
- Highlights (`colorB`, color): The color toward the ribbon's edges, its free end and its sheen.
- Edge-on (`colorC`, color): Where the ribbon turns edge-on, its glints and runs of light.
- Background (`background`, color): The dark ground.
- Width (`width`, slider): How wide the ribbon is.
- Threads (`threads`, slider): How many threads make up the ribbon.
- Twist (`twist`, slider): How many half-turns the ribbon makes along its length.
- Glow (`glow`, slider): The deep glow round the ribbon.
- Direction (`rotation`, slider): Turns the ribbon's path round the frame's center, in degrees.
- Mirror (`mirror`, checkbox): Rise from the other side: the path mirrored left to right.
- Offset (`offset`, slider): Moves the ribbon across the frame, as a fraction of its width.
- Speed (`speed`, slider): How fast the twist travels and the ribbon sways.
- Surge (`surge`, slider): How much the ribbon speeds up and slows down; zero keeps one steady pace.
- Twist travel (`twistTravel`, slider): How fast, and which way, the twist travels along the ribbon; zero holds it still.
- Sway (`sway`, slider): How far the ribbon sways.
- Pointer response (`interaction`, slider): How far the pointer draws the ribbon.
- Signals (`signals`, slider): How bright the pulses of light are that run along the threads from the pointer.
- Signal speed (`signalSpeed`, slider): How fast the signals run along the threads.
- Opacity (`opacity`, slider): Opacity of the whole effect, including its background.
- Background opacity (`backgroundOpacity`, slider): Fade the background on its own, for a transparent overlay.

## Compatibility

WebGPU rendering requires a supported browser and secure context: Chrome and Edge (Windows, macOS and ChromeOS; Chrome on Android 12 or newer), Safari 26 (Mac, iPhone and iPad) and Firefox (Windows (from 141) and Apple silicon Macs (from 145)). Firefox on Linux, Android and Intel Macs is still rolling it out (checked October 2026). The landing shows a real poster for the selected Look when live rendering is unavailable. The standard exported component does not bundle a poster fallback. Supply your own fallback in the host layout.

## Performance

4.85 ms GPU timestamp median; p95 6.685 ms. 1440x900 @ dpr 1.25; Apple M2 (8-core GPU), Metal driver on macOS Version 26.6.2 (Build 25G83); measured 2026-10-19. This is a recorded headless sample, not a browser FPS or mobile-performance guarantee.

## Questions

### Can I change which way the ribbon runs?

Yes. Direction turns its path round the frame, Mirror flips it left to right, and Twist travel sets which way, and how fast, its twist runs along it.

### Can it move at a steady pace?

Surge sets how much it speeds up and slows down; at zero it moves evenly.

### What does the pointer do?

It draws the ribbon a little toward itself and, over it, sends fine signals of light along the threads; Signals and Signal speed set how bright and how fast.

### What happens without WebGPU?

This landing shows a still poster of your selected Color Look. The raw WGSL needs a WebGPU host. Landing posters are not bundled in the Export Kit: add your own fallback around the exported component.

### Can I use this shader commercially?
